Can I eat and / or drink during a visit to the library?

Answer

Libraries & Collections has a food and drink policy that gives some freedom to snack as you study, while still ensuring that the library remains a space for quiet study.

Please note that no food or drink is permitted in the Special Collections or Archives reading rooms.

We kindly ask that you abide by the following guidelines, to help to insure the health and safety of all library users and a long life for library collections, furnishings, and equipment. Protecting them from mice, insects, and harmful molds.

All library areas are quiet zones except for designated silent and discuss zones.

  • Cold food can be consumed in quiet and discuss zones.
  • No disruptive food, e.g. strong odour or noisy food.
  • No food in silent zones.
  • Hot food is not permitted in the library.*
  • Lidded hot and cold drinks are welcome within the libraries.

Please be considerate of others, if your food or drink is disruptive e.g., has a strong odour or noisy you will be asked to remove it. No food deliveries or alcohol are permitted, except for special library events where refreshments are supplied.

Please dispose of your own rubbish and recycling in the bins around the libraries and avoid putting liquids in them. If you spill anything, please notify Library staff as soon as possible.

Thank you for helping us make the libraries comfortable environment for everyone.

*The Maughan Library is the only library that has a café (the Rolls Cafe on Floor -1), where hot food can be eaten. The café offers a selection of sandwiches, cakes and snacks, and freshly made barista coffee. Microwaves and vending machines are also available at the back of the room.

This area can be used as a study space outside of the lunch period. Non restaurant food or drink can only be consumed out of operating hours:

Open Monday-Friday (during term-time) 10.00 – 16.30.

Closed over the summer between June - September.
