Why can't I reserve a book?

Answer

If you can't reserve a book please check the following:

  • Have you reached your reservation limit?
  • Do you have a block on your library account?
  • Are you trying to reserve a short loan or reference only book?
  • Has your IT/ library account expired (Have a look at the date on your KCL ID card).

If you are still encountering difficulties of this, please speak to a member of library staff on site, or alternatively get in touch with us via our LibChat service for rapid assistance.

You can find LibChat on the right of the screen (desktop) or scroll to the bottom (mobile) on LibAnswers.

Short Loan items
Items within our short-loan collections are often more in-demand, and we have a responsibility to ensure that these resources are prioritised for more regular circulation, to enable an easy way to access key course content. Enabling reservations on these items would be counterproductive to that aim. If you require an item for a longer period of time, please check on our Library Search if another copy is available to pick up 'On Shelf', or able to be reserved.

Reference Only items
We have a number of items in libraries that are a part of our reference-only collection. These items are intended to support study within the library and are usually not suitable for borrowing due to size and the impracticality of storing numerous copies. Due to the limited availability of these items, we only allow them to be browsed on site.
